Havuts Tar Monastery

Also called Havuts Tar Vank, the monastery is situated on a promontory across the Azat river valley located in Kotayk Region. The monastery dates to the 11th-13th centuries. It has an easy access from Khosrov State Reserve that is along the Garni Canyon. To hike there one should take the eastern side of the reserve entrance straight to the monastic complex. The Havuts Tar Trail will take you to the ruins of the monastery and the khachkars around. Walking further across the trail you will meet the walled fortification of the early medieval monastery. The trail ends with a small chapel and three impressive khachkars. The monastery is known to have had a brief visit during October 1734 by Abraham Kretatsi during the time while he was serving the Catholicos Abraham II. He brought a monk as a guide and spent two days there while on his pilgrimage to a number of churches and monasteries across Armenia.
