Areni Village

Population - 1,865

Region - Vayots Dzor

The region of Vayots Dzor is popular for its wine production especially in the villages of Areni and Getap. One of the famous Armenian architects Momik designed the medieval church of Areni or St. Astvatsatsin Church that was completed in 1321. It is one of the unique churches in Armenia that is built of limestone. To the northeast of the church, there are the ruins of the 13-th century bridge with the older remains of the bridge at the same place.

In January 2011 archaeologists announced the discovery of the earliest known winery, the Areni-1 winery, seven months after the world's oldest leather shoe, the Areni-1 shoe, was discovered in the same cave. The winery, which is over six-thousand years old, contains a wine press, fermentation vats, jars, and cups.

Each year in Areni village takes place already a traditional “Wine Festival”, where besides the inhabitants of the region there are also present representatives of various departments.Areni Wine Festival gives a great opportunity to discover Armenia. Those who even once have taken part in Areni Wine Festival in Armenia will never forget the bright impressions. During the Areni Wine Festival, you will be able to taste the best range of Armenian wines, which are very highly valued by European consumers.
